Sinkhole in Guatemala City

Three-storey building and house -- Gone!

We don’t have weather over here.  We just have a pale imitation.  Take Guatemala City, for instance.  They are waking up today to the news that they have lost a three-storey building overnight, plus a house.  Where did they go?  Into a sinkhole, which spontaneously opened up at or near a major street intersection.

The recent eruption of the nearby Pacaya volcano began it all, spitting out red-hot lava and black sand for miles.  If that wasn’t bad enough, hard on its heels came Tropical Storm Agatha. The torrential rain which Aggie brought with her turned Pacaya’s sand  into quick-clay .  And the effects of all that water and loosened soil opened up the sink-hole.

Locals say a poor drainage system was to blame for the sinkhole.  At the moment, we have no news on fatalities.

Don’t ever compain about British weather again.
